How this applies to an existing Portfolio Lighting installation

This Universal NEC Landscape Lighting Code & Compliance Calculator resource can help when inspecting, repairing or extending Portfolio outdoor lighting. First identify the transformer, its supply connection, the existing cable and the fixture locations; requirements depend on the equipment listing, installation conditions and locally adopted rules.

Portfolio owner’s first step: For Portfolio equipment, compare the actual nameplate and installation instructions with the safety topic below before altering the system.

Apply this requirement to an existing Portfolio installation

For Universal NEC Landscape Lighting Code & Compliance Calculator, start with evidence from the installed power equipment rather than a visually similar replacement. Record the exact model label, input/output ratings shown on the unit, terminal arrangement, control method, outgoing cable runs, and which runs still operate. That information separates a supply/control problem from a downstream cable, connector, or fixture fault and gives you a defensible replacement specification if repair is not practical. Use Portfolio Parts for the next model- or symptom-specific step.

Electrical compliance involves more than conductor sizing, transformer loading, and installation methods. Certain projects may also be subject to emergency-lighting provisions, pathway illumination requirements, and life-safety standards that extend beyond traditional landscape lighting design. For a deeper review of those specialized requirements, see our emergency backup lighting and egress pathway compliance guide.

How the Calculations Work β€” NEC Source References

⛏️ Burial Depth β€” NEC Table 300.5

Table 300.5 is a matrix of location (rows) Γ— wiring method (columns). The critical column for landscape lighting is Column 5: "Circuits for Control of Irrigation and Landscape Lighting, 30 Volts or Less." This column specifies 6 inches minimum in all residential locations β€” including under driveways β€” because the ≀30V voltage class presents minimal shock hazard compared to line voltage.

Exceptions that change this: Footnote A (listed systems with installation-specific instructions may allow shallower depth). Under streets/highways: inspector may require conformance to Column 1 (24") regardless of voltage. Always verify with your AHJ.

⚑ Voltage Drop β€” DC/Low-Voltage Formula

For 12V/24V landscape lighting systems, the standard voltage drop formula for a home-run circuit is:

VD = 2 Γ— L Γ— I Γ— R
I = Watts Γ· Volts (amps)
R = Ξ©/ft (from resistance table)
VD% = (VD Γ· Source Voltage) Γ— 100

Target: ≀5% for optimal brightness
Maximum: ≀10% for LED systems

Wire resistance (copper, Ξ© per 1,000 ft): 18 AWG=6.39 | 16=4.02 | 14=3.07 | 12=1.93 | 10=1.21 | 8=0.764. For a loop run with distributed fixtures, effective load point is approximately the midpoint of the run.

πŸ”Œ Transformer Load β€” NEC 411.6

NEC Article 411.6 limits landscape lighting system output to 25 amperes maximum. For a 12V transformer: 25A Γ— 12V = 300W maximum output. For a 24V transformer: 25A Γ— 24V = 600W maximum.

The 80% loading rule (NEC 210.19 informational note and general best practice): do not load a transformer above 80% of its rated capacity to allow headroom for startup current and future additions. A 300W transformer should carry no more than 240W of connected load.

80% Rule: Load ≀ Capacity Γ— 0.80
Max Load (300W) = 300 Γ— 0.80 = 240W
Primary Amps = Total Watts Γ· 120V
NEC 411.6: primary circuit ≀ 20A

πŸ”§ Conduit Fill β€” NEC Chapter 9, Table 1

NEC Chapter 9, Table 1 limits conductor fill as a percentage of conduit internal cross-sectional area:

1 conductor: 53% maximum fill
2 conductors: 31% maximum fill
3+ conductors: 40% maximum fill

Fill% = (Conductor Area Γ— Count)
Γ· Conduit Internal Area

Nipple exception (≀24" length): 60%

Conductor areas (THHN/THWN, sq in): 18=0.0092 | 16=0.0109 | 14=0.0139 | 12=0.0181 | 10=0.0243 | 8=0.0437. Use NEC Chapter 9 Table 5 for other conductor types. Always use the specific conduit type's Table 4 internal area β€” PVC Sch 40 and Sch 80 have different IDs at the same trade size.
